Northern Lights Update: These States Could Get Another Chance At Viewing Aurora Borealis

Jesus stargazing at night

Topline The northernmost states of the U.S. have a chance to view the Northern Lights for the second night in a row Wednesday, according to an updated forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which also issued a moderate geomagnetic storm alert.

Key Facts

A KP index of four is forecast for Wednesday night, according to NOAA, meaning a brighter aurora and an increase in Northern Lights formations and motion could materialize.

The appearance of the lights are due to a geomagnetic storm, which can result in the collision of ions with Earth’s atmospheric gases, creating Northern Lights.

The aurora’s curved viewing line is nearly identical to the one forecast for Tuesday night, reaching as far down as central South Dakota—though chances of seeing the Northern Lights are slim the closer to the viewing line observers may be.

The updated forecast is far more favorable than the Wednesday night prediction NOAA released Tuesday, when the viewing line was set deep into Canada alongside a large drop in aurora activity.

Where Will The Northern Lights Be Visible Tonight?

Northern areas of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Maine have a small chance at seeing the lights Tuesday night.

How Do You See The Northern Lights?

The window between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. is best for viewing the lights, which also have a greater chance of being seen if observers are located in an area with clear skies and no light pollution.

How Do You Photograph The Northern Lights?

Those looking to snap photos of the Northern Lights with their smartphone should do so using night mode and slow shutter speeds, if possible. Using manual focus can also prove useful for capturing the details of the Northern Lights.

Key Background

Northern Lights form during increases in solar activity, which include solar flares and coronal mass ejections (expulsion of plasma from the sun). Solar activity has flared up at multiple points in the last month, providing northern states, parts of Canada and Alaska with multiple opportunities to see the aurora borealis. NOAA predicts the appearances of sun spots, a source behind geomagnetic storms that can trigger auroras, to peak in 2025.

Thinking about Prince Philip in a quarter of hour

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II

Commonwealth Games, Aug 3 1978 in Edmonton.

A crowd of 45,000 people packed Edmonton’s newly-built Commonwealth Stadium for the opening ceremony, which was televised around the world. They rose and applauded as the royal party entered the stadium.

Irish boxer Barry wins the bantamweight gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, August 1978.

I won the Ulster juvenile title a year earlier then went straight in and won the Ulster seniors at 16. Prince Phillip watched my winning bout in the bantamweight final. Years later I attended an event at the Palace for world champions across all sports. Then Queen said, “Oh, you were in Edmonton.” I said yes, your husband was there. And she replied quick as a flash, “Excuse me, I was there too.” It was an honour to meet the Queen and it was from the Commonwealth Games that she remembered me.

Happy days.

Eastern Europe, particularly European Championships finalists Zenon Stefaniuk of Poland, was favoured in this event but the man was eliminated in their first bouts.

Wolfgang Behrendt, German Bantamweight Boxer.

He became the first boxer from the GDR to win an Olympic title although it should be pointed out that East and West competed in a combined German team in 1956.

Summer
← Tokyo 2020 Los Angeles 2028 →

Paris was awarded the Games at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru, on 13 September 2017. After multiple withdrawals that left only Paris and Los Angeles in contention, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a process to concurrently award the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics to the two remaining candidate cities; both of the bids were praised for high technical plans and innovative ways to use a record-breaking number of existing and temporary facilities. Having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924, Paris becomes the second city ever to host the Summer Olympics three times (after London, which hosted the games in 1908, 1948, and 2012). Paris 2024 marks the centenary of Paris 1924 and Chamonix 1924 (which in turn marks the centenary of the Winter Olympics) and is the sixth Olympic Games hosted by France (three Summer Olympics and three Winter Olympics) and the first French Olympics since the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville. The Summer Games returned to the traditional four-year Olympiad cycle, after the 2020 edition was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paris 2024 features the debut of breakdancing as an Olympic sport, and will be the final Olympic Games held during the IOC presidency of Thomas Bach. The 2024 Games are expected to cost €9 billion.
